Security for the West Southport Area

During the Spring of 2016, dozens of families living near the Southport Corridor formed the Southport Community Alliance to address the growing security concerns emerging in their community:

The Southport Community Alliance, with over 100 families supporting it, covers the area between Southport on the East, Ashland on the West, Grace on the North and Roscoe on the South. The Alliance provides safety and security education for the community.

Beginning in July 2016 the Southport Community Alliance also contracted with a major Illinois licensed security firm (also utilized by Fortune 500 companies) for security patrols of the Alliance area. These patrols are made by plain clothes off-duty police officers in an unmarked car in order to deter crime and report suspicious activity to the on-duty police.

In developing its security program, the Southport Community Alliance studied some of the existing examples of private security patrols in Chicago including on the Gold Coast and in Marquette Park

The leadership of the Alliance and the security company hired to perform the patrols are in regular communication with the Chicago Police Department to ensure their efforts assist and support the 19th District's efforts.
